Recruiting week

Well, this past week was full of recruiters on campus trying to hire people, well engineers. I participated in a few of the events, but missed the major one entirely.

It started on Monday with the welcome dinner. Essentially free food at the Hilton where students sit at a table with a recruiter. I sat with Texas Instruments, and it was interesting to hear what they had to say. Nothing too specific as this was little more than a meet and greet combined with free food.

Then Tuesday came along, and I completely neglected to go to the career fair itself. Well, decided that I didn’t want to go as it is likely a waste of time (or at least has been a majority of the times I went in the past years). Later that evening though, Microsoft had a free food event, uh I mean meet the company meeting, and I saw my good friend Noah there recruiting for MS. Bill told me there about the fun he had at the career fair. He put “Some Guy” on his name tag, and decided that instead of answering recruiters’ questions, he would ask one that they couldn’t answer. It was an algorithms question, and he heard responses from “I would ask this guy” to “I don’t know, I use Java”. If I were in such a position, I would be tempted to fire the later one, because no matter what language you are using, you need to understand algorithms. Not knowing the answer is one thing, but dismissing the idea of programming algorithms out of using a certain language is the mark of a bad programmer.

Wednesday, again, I neglected to go to the career fair. Supposedly, there were different companies each day, but I doubt it would be worth the visit any more this year than previous ones. Later that evening MS had another event in the same location as the Mac User’s Group. Got to love the irony. I got to spend more time catching up with Noah there.

Finally, Noah invited me to an MS sponsored dinner an Johnny Carinos. As a result of the nice dinner and conversation, I missed the first half of the game where we lost horribly to Miami. At least I saw the one quarter where we actually scored some points.

The rest of the week was mostly uneventful, but on the whole it was a good week.

Until next time.

Yep, it was. We’ll have to do it again sometime.
